When I was in school, I was led to believe you were either a \u201cgood student\u201d or, well, you weren\u2019t.\u00a0 For the longest time I figured that\u2019s the way school worked.\u00a0 Looking back, I wish we knew more about enneagram types.<\/span><\/p>

In college, I took an Educational Psychology course, and my world opened up.\u00a0 I learned that there is no such thing as a \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d student, and I\u2019m a better teacher for it.\u00a0 Here is where the foundation was laid to understanding enneagram types and how they can benefit the students in my classroom.<\/span><\/p>

What Are Enneagram Types?<\/b><\/h2>

There are nine enneagram types that help shape who each of us is.\u00a0 Relying on the Greek word for \u201cnine,\u201d enneagram types include distinct personalities that make you <\/span>you:<\/span><\/i> the reformer; the helper; the achiever; the individualist; the investigator; the loyalty; the enthusiast; the challenger; and the peacemaker.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/span><\/p>

Fascinatingly, your enneagram type can make you more or less compatible with other enneagram types; it could also help inform you about success or failure with life\u2019s ventures.\u00a0 As a teacher, if you familiarize yourself with the concept of enneagram types, you can use this information in a variety of ways that will benefit your students and your classroom ecosystem.\u00a0 The key is to help students understand the concept, connect it to their current lives, and buy in to how it can benefit them in the long run.<\/span><\/p>

How Do I Know My Enneagram Type?<\/b><\/h2>

In my classroom, understanding your enneagram type begins with a survey.\u00a0 I rely on this survey from <\/span>Truity<\/span><\/a>; it\u2019s quick and easy to follow thanks to straightforward language and relatable statements.<\/span><\/p>

The test leads you through seven steps, the first six of which present you with a range of statements. Your job is to evaluate how accurately or inaccurately each statement applies to you.\u00a0 For example, it will posit: \u201cI feel my emotions very deeply\u201d and \u201cI am a natural caretaker.\u201d\u00a0 At the end of these statements, you can offer (or decline) to enter your email address.<\/span><\/p>

Another screen prompts you for information like your birthday and age; again, you have the option not to offer details.<\/span><\/p>

Then you can \u201cSee My Results\u201d!\u00a0 For a fee, you can \u201cunlock\u201d the full report, but I don\u2019t really think that\u2019s necessary to help your students learn and make this activity impactful.<\/span><\/p>

As you can see from my results, Truity gives you a helpful graphic that highlights your strongest enneagram types; yes, you have more than one!\u00a0 I find this to be much like Gardner\u2019s Multiple Intelligences Theory, and I love to use this information in my classroom.\u00a0 Sometimes our students feel like they\u2019ve been put into a category (again, \u201cbad student\u201d\/\u201dgood student\u201d), which is devastatingly dangerous for our learners.\u00a0 I love to point out to my kids that \u201cIt\u2019s not about whether or not you <\/span>are<\/span><\/i> smart but all the <\/span>different ways<\/span><\/i> you are smart.\u201d\u00a0 That you are smart is a given and not up for debate.\u00a0 Enneagram types, to me, are very similar in this regard.<\/span><\/p>

So I\u2019m sure if I \u201cunlocked my full report,\u201d I could get more information about exactly what enneagram type number three looks like.\u00a0 But why not just use good old Google for free?<\/span><\/p>

Enneagram Types Explained<\/b><\/h3>

The <\/span>Enneagram Institute<\/span><\/a> cohesively outlines the nine different enneagram types.<\/span><\/p>

1: The Reformer<\/b><\/h4>

The reformer is rational and idealistic; they are purposeful and in control of self.\u00a0 They also have perfectionist tendencies.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/span><\/p>

2: The Helper<\/b><\/h4>

The helper, not surprisingly, is caring and nurturing.\u00a0 They have interpersonal strengths and are demonstrative and giving.\u00a0 They seek to please people but can also be possessive.<\/span><\/p>

3: The Achiever<\/b><\/h4>

This is my most prominent enneagram type.\u00a0 Achievers like myself are success-oriented as they seek to excel.\u00a0 They are hyper-aware of what others think of them and adapt to a range of situations.\u00a0 They\u2019re pragmatic and driven.<\/span><\/p>

4: The Individualist<\/b><\/h4>

If you\u2019re a number four, you\u2019re most likely more sensitive than others, maybe even withdrawn.\u00a0 You are expressive and maybe a tad dramatic, self-absorbed and temperamental.<\/span><\/p>

5: The Investigator<\/b><\/h4>

Investigator enneagram types are intense and cerebral, often isolating themselves and holding secrets.\u00a0 But they\u2019re also very perceptive and innovative.\u00a0 (These are the people you\u2019d probably trust to dig up a ton of dirt on someone with just their Instagram handle and the name of their elementary school.)<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

6: The Loyalist<\/b><\/h4>

Loyalists are committed and focused on security.\u00a0 On the positive side of things, they are engaging and responsible but they can also be very anxious and suspicious, too.<\/span><\/p>

7: The Enthusiast<\/b><\/h4>

Enthusiasts are busy and fun-loving; they\u2019re spontaneous and versatile.\u00a0 Careful, though, because they can be scattered and distractible.<\/span><\/p>

8: The Challenger<\/b><\/h4>

This enneagram type also stands out from my results.\u00a0 If you, like me, have challenger tendencies, you are powerful and dominating.\u00a0 Though you can be confrontational, you are self-confident, decisive, and strong-willed.<\/span><\/p>

9: The Peacemaker<\/b><\/h4>

Peacemakers are easygoing and likable; they\u2019re receptive and reassuring, often going with the flow.<\/span><\/p>

How Can I Use Enneagram Types with my Students?<\/b><\/h3>

When I teach <\/span>enneagram types<\/span><\/a> in my classroom, I like to do three things: introduce the concept; offer a chance for students to take the survey; and help students see the real-world applications.<\/span><\/p>

Introducing the Concept<\/b><\/h3>

To gain students\u2019 attention and help them find meaning in what we\u2019re about to do, I often present students with some background information on enneagram types (like what I just shared about enneagram types).\u00a0 I like to start with a quick, informal poll of different personality types or tendencies (\u201cWho here has a beige flag?\u201d for instance).\u00a0 Then we\u2019ll get into the more nitty-gritty details of the activity.<\/span><\/p>

You could present the information on your screen and students could follow along.\u00a0 Or you could have students go on a webquest to find out about enneagram types.<\/span><\/p>

Putting Students in the Driver\u2019s Seat<\/b><\/h3>

After students have an idea of what we\u2019re working towards, I like to give them a good chunk of time to take the survey I mentioned earlier.\u00a0 I teach high school, so most of my students are pretty technology-savvy and decent readers.\u00a0 Even if I account for some hiccups along the way, it\u2019s hard to imagine the survey portion of the lesson would take more than ten minutes.<\/span><\/p>

I instruct students to screenshot their results.\u00a0 Depending on technology available to you, students could complete a digital workbook for the lesson or record their scores on a piece of paper.\u00a0 The goal is for them to have a clear idea of their top two or three enneagram types before you move onto the next part of the lesson.\u00a0 This is key in making it really count for students.<\/span><\/p>

Making It Count<\/b><\/h3>

If all we did was find out our enneagram types, the lesson wouldn\u2019t be much more valuable than, \u201cOh, cool.\u00a0 Now what?\u201d\u00a0 before students forget about the activity for good.\u00a0 So how can we make enneagram types impactful and long-lasting?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Give students a reason to buy into your lesson.\u00a0 Show them how it applies to them <\/span>today<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>in the future.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 I like to do that in a few ways.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Note: I have students complete a worksheet throughout the lesson for two main reasons.\u00a0 One: by collecting their work, I can learn more about each person.\u00a0 And two: when I return their worksheets, students can refer back to different details from the day.<\/span><\/p>

To make this count, I first have students envision how their enneagram type can help them in moments of weakness.\u00a0 Something that\u2019s really hard for a lot of students (or adults) to do is ask for help.\u00a0 So I found this informative graphic that breaks it down by enneagram type.\u00a0 As a type three, remember, I\u2019m a go-getter, someone who wants to succeed and please others above almost anything else.\u00a0 The help I need is to remember that I don\u2019t have to say \u201cyes\u201d to everything and that I can prioritize my needs every now and then.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s okay for students to see that they\u2019re vulnerable.\u00a0 If they can recognize it, that\u2019s the first step they need to take to move forward.\u00a0 Again for those in the back: <\/span>make it meaningful and applicable.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Then, I have students spend some time thinking about how they present themselves to others.\u00a0 Group work and peer interactions are unavoidable in school and for many, beyond that.\u00a0 I like to have students think a little bit about how they interact with others.\u00a0 Now that they know their enneagram type and some of their strengths and weaknesses, they can be more informed about their interactions with others.<\/span><\/p>

Again, to use myself as an example, enneagram type number one also stood out.\u00a0 One of those traits, if you recall, includes perfectionist tendencies.\u00a0 One \u201cdon\u2019t\u201d for me would be not to let me do all the work.\u00a0 Now if that isn\u2019t relevant for a secondary student, I don\u2019t know what is.\u00a0 How many memes exist about group work?\u00a0 The key is to help students see the relevancy in this activity.<\/span><\/p>

But it\u2019s equally as important for students to invest in the future with their enneagram type, too.\u00a0 The next part of the activity, featuring another awesome graphic, pairs enneagram types up with potential careers.\u00a0 Interestingly, as an undergraduate I <\/span>did <\/span><\/i>consider a career in marketing, which caters nicely to enneagram type number three.\u00a0 But number two wasn\u2019t really on my radar, yet here I am as a veteran teacher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So this particular component, or any part of the activity, can also serve as a nice conversation starter.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay if students disagree with some of the information presented.<\/span><\/p>

Lastly, I want students to have a little bit of fun with their enneagram type.\u00a0 I find it so fascinating that different enneagram types are more or less compatible with others.\u00a0 The final piece of the activity invites students to explore those compatibilities and consider their own friendship (and love interests even!): are they compatible?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2>
