{"id":872,"date":"2023-11-13T01:50:21","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T01:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seizethedayinela.com\/?p=872"},"modified":"2025-04-24T12:32:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T12:32:31","slug":"choice-boards-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seizethedayinela.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/13\/choice-boards-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Choice Boards in the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"872\" class=\"elementor elementor-872\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6927ee3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6927ee3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e853e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e853e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choice boards are one of the activities I wish existed when I was in school.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back then, I never tested well.\u00a0 I thrived on essays where I could basically talk my way into convincing my teacher I knew what was going on.\u00a0 Though projects were preferable to tests, I loathed group work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as a teacher, I seize any opportunity to offer my students choice boards, especially for assessment at the end of a novel or short story unit.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Choice Boards: Why Use Them?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choice boards are a versatile and universal yet personalized way to assess your students\u2019 learning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re versatile because you can pretty much cater a choice board activity to any text: an entire novel or just a portion of it; poetry; short stories; drama.\u00a0 The list goes on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have a strong foundation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Literature-Choice-Board-Activity-10017664\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like this one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can tailor it any way you see fit.\u00a0 And I love that choice boards suit whatever timeframe you\u2019re dealing with.\u00a0 You can definitely use them in a pinch, quickly assessing students\u2019 learning of a shorter text.\u00a0 Or, if you have the time, develop choice boards into an end-of-unit assessment; give students plenty of time to really invest in their work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choice boards are universal yet personalized.\u00a0 From a teacher\u2019s standpoint, they highlight any learner\u2019s strengths; you don\u2019t have to worry about what once plagued me as a student sweating over tests.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what makes choice boards personalized is the voice and choice present within the assignment; you\u2019ll be shocked to engage even your most reluctant learners.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What Do Choice Boards Look Like?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to put together your own choice board activity, start with just a single piece of paper, double-sided.\u00a0 On the front side, offer plenty of creative and innovative choices with clear-cut instructions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you want students to advertise a text, like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, be explicit with your length expectations (3-5 sentences) and what techniques you want them to use; in my case, I want them to employ rhetoric.\u00a0 This is just one way I try to offer variety with choice boards.\u00a0 If a student doesn\u2019t feel confident about ethos, logos, or pathos, there are a dozen or so other choices to show what they know.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is to present students with at least a half dozen creative yet rigorous choices.\u00a0 From there, have them choose just enough to demonstrate understanding.\u00a0 For example, if you have a list of twelve choices, require them to pick eight, at least.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So on your opening page, offer a host of options keeping in mind your goals and your students\u2019 hopes.\u00a0 Your goals should include assessing student knowledge of a text.\u00a0 My choice boards include a versatile range of literary devices like setting, theme, symbolism, and dialogue, just to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And keep in mind your students\u2019 hopes; they\u2019ll want you to put in some effort and creativity as you offer them clever choices.\u00a0 To reference another choice board, I love what students can do if they choose the dialogue box.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The back page of your choice board should then be the space students will use to show what they know.\u00a0 It can be nice and easy on the back of your directions.\u00a0 Or, if you plan to develop the choice board into a more formal assessment, have students create their boards on card stock or poster paper.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final reason I absolutely adore choice boards is the originality required.\u00a0 Specifically, students cannot rely solely on artificial intelligence to complete the task.\u00a0 Sure, they could look up the major characters of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Catcher-in-the-Rye-Choice-Board-10017785\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catcher in the Rye<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they\u2019re going to have to dig more deeply than that to \u201cTalk It Out\u201d and imagine a conversation between Holden and Allie that never happened.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Dreaded Substitute Debacle: How Choice Boards Can Help<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t need to tell you about the substitute teacher shortage, nor do you need to be reminded that it\u2019s often more work to prepare a day home from school than it is to tough it out and teach.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do, however, want to offer you a lifeline when it comes to missing a day in your classroom, whether you plan for it or not.\u00a0 This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Emergency-Sub-Plans-Secondary-English-Story-Choice-Board-Activity-9527312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency substitute plan choice board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you out in a lot of ways.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Prep It and Forget It<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First off, these emergency plans are a lifesaver because you can pair them with just about any fictional text.\u00a0 Again, that might be a short story, a novel, or even a poem or play.\u00a0 If you miss school in the middle of one of these units, you need nothing other than the choice board activity to be ready to go.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you are in the middle of, say, an argumentative writing unit and have nothing fictional to use, these plans still work.\u00a0 Simply give yourself a bit of a heads up and find a poem or short story that resonates with your students, no matter what time of year.\u00a0 For me, that\u2019s definitely a story like \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Harrison-Bergeron-Short-Story-and-Comprehension-Questions-9527368\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harrison Bergeron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or a poem like \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Helen-by-hd-with-Discussion-Questions-9102953\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, that means putting together a folder in August that includes a handful of shorter literary texts and enough copies of the choice board activity to get me through them.\u00a0 Easy peasy.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Set the Tone with Choice Boards<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason I love to use choice boards when I\u2019m not at school is their consistency and familiarity.\u00a0 If you employ choice boards consistently enough in the classroom. (I suggest starting the year off with one, especially if your district includes summer reading assignments.)\u00a0 Lay the foundation for what choice boards are, why they\u2019re important, and how interesting they can be.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also help set the tone with choice board expectations.\u00a0 Again, I suggest starting early and staying strong.\u00a0 If a student submits a choice board using nothing but a Number Two pencil and you required color, return the paper and discuss with the student what you expect in terms of quality.\u00a0 Likewise with the content students include on their choice boards.\u00a0 If your directions outlined a three-sentence response and a student writes barely one, address it early on.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you set the consistency and tone of choice boards early in the school year, you can rest assured that students will know what to do if your substitute plans include this task.\u00a0 I guarantee if you\u2019ve put in the hard work upfront, it\u2019ll pay off in dividends later on when it comes to quality and classroom management.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019ll surely have a domino-effect: you leave a high-quality substitute activity; students know what your expectations are and use their time wisely to get it done.\u00a0 The substitute has little to no issues with student behavior; that substitute looks forward to working in your classroom again!<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Student Examples: Choice Boards<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first year teaching high school English, I took over for my predecessor at the beginning of January.\u00a0 The students I inherited had had either a long-term substitute or day-to-day teacher coverages for two months.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, kids were thankful to have a consistent face teaching them each day.\u00a0 But on the other, they grew accustomed to and kind of liked the lack of structure and lower expectations.\u00a0 Heck, I don\u2019t even blame them most of the time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admittedly, my first weeks were a breeze.\u00a0 After more than eight years at the middle level, I was finally living my dream in high school!\u00a0 I knew a lot of kids already having taught them just two years prior when they were in eighth grade.\u00a0 And the classroom management side of things was worlds different at the high school than what I trained for at the middle level.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in February, I got pneumonia and had to take almost two weeks off from school.\u00a0 Behavior aside, my absence was a train-wreck.\u00a0 I was in a whole new world when it came to substitute plans and student expectations.\u00a0 When I taught at the middle school, the expectation was to over-prepare a rigorous, concurrent lesson.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the high school, kids saw a teacher absence as a free day.\u00a0 They were downright indignant that I actually collected <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and graded<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their work when I was out.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back, my students and I probably should have met in the middle.\u00a0 I should have eased up a bit when it came to the workload I gave them.\u00a0 But they also should have known better than to think it was a free day.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I next had a day away from my classroom, I didn\u2019t have pneumonia, for one, but it was also a planned absence.\u00a0 And I was going to be ready.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had just started our Romanticism Literature unit.\u00a0 While it wasn\u2019t ideal that I missed a day early in the unit, our first text, \u201cHow Much Land Does a Man Need\u201d by Tolstoy was relatively manageable if students were going to tackle a text independently.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I ran copies of the story and enough handouts of my choice board activity for each student.\u00a0 My directions were clear and, thanks to our train-wreck in February, students knew not to test me this time around.\u00a0 Students were given the full 84-minute period to first read the story and then begin their choice board activity, which could be finished for homework.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results astounded me.\u00a0 Firstly, nearly every student completed the work.\u00a0 And secondly, the quality of the choice boards was phenomenal.\u00a0 Students proved they understood the story on both a comprehension level and a deeper, thematic level, too.\u00a0 Here are some of my favorite choice boards from that day.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So whether you\u2019re in the thick of an intense novel unit like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Great-Gatsby-Choice-Board-10017752\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Gatsby<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/To-Kill-a-Mockingbird-Choice-Board-Activity-10017724\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Kill a Mockingbird<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or you\u2019re teaching a drama like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Oedipus-Rex-Choice-Board-10017912\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oedipus Rex<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, choice boards can be a game changer in your classroom.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re versatile;
