class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s face it: poetry can be a challenge, not only for you as the teacher but for students who struggle to engage and understand.\u00a0 This lesson plan idea is sure to boost your students\u2019 confidence, get them moving and get them sharing in meaningful ways.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I begin this low prep poetry lesson with a reading of each poem.\u00a0 After we read the poem, we take some time to jot down basic summary details: who, what, when, where.\u00a0 Depending on the complexity of the poems, I\u2019ll throw in some motifs at the bottom of the page as hints.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then students move into small groups (think 2-4 kids, tops).\u00a0 With that group, they\u2019ll rotate through 5 or 6 stations.\u00a0 Spaced out around my classroom is each poem enlarged on a poster.\u00a0 That poster also has 5 or 6 literary elements (again, which ones depends on the poetry we read that day).\u00a0 Some ideas include structure and form; sound devices; imagery; symbolism; mood and tone; and motif and theme.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahead of time, I make the posters.\u00a0 This is the most time-consuming part of this low-prep poetry lesson.\u00a0 I print out the poem and labels featuring the literary elements.\u00a0 But you could save yourself time by handwriting (or having the kids write) the elements.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are given a designated amount of time at each poster.\u00a0 Individual groups study a different poem each cycle.\u00a0 But everyone addresses the same literary element.\u00a0 I find this allows me to preview the concept briefly before giving students the green light to discuss.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the timer expires, students move to the next poster and thus the next literary element.\u00a0 By the time we\u2019re done, they\u2019ve reviewed all poems in our \u201cplaylist\u201d and looked at them from different literary vantage points.\u00a0 Plus, they have the added benefit of seeing what each group before them wrote.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final step of this low prep poetry lesson is the summarizer.\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s an exit slip on which students write a comparative paragraph.\u00a0 The objective is for students to draw meaningful connections and parallels between the poetry and literary elements.\u00a0 I allow students to first brainstorm their answer with their group.\u00a0 Then they go back to their seats to complete the final task individually.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element 400;\">The first step is to know what your students are studying.\u00a0 Curate your playlist, so to speak.\u00a0 For me, I teach British Literature and our final unit of the semester is the twentieth century.\u00a0 Though we study a variety of genres, I love to set aside a day for this low prep poetry lesson.\u00a0 I set my time frame from WWI to about 1960.\u00a0 My curated list scenario.\u00a0 But I do feel that Yeats and Thomas are prolific enough to include twice.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, for this low prep poetry lesson, I try to incorporate a variety of voices and perspectives.\u00a0 Many of these center around similar motifs and themes: mortality, war, 400;\">Student Handout: I copy a set of the poetry for each student.\u00a0 This is what we begin with when we read the poems and summarize them.\u00a0 I encourage \u2013 but don\u2019t require for time constraints \u2013 students to annotate<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posters: As mentioned, this is the most time-consuming component of the low prep poetry lesson, but even so, it\u2019s not all that bad.\u00a0 I grab enough poster paper for however many poems I\u2019m doing.\u00a0 I enlarge each poem and print a set of labels based on the literary elements we\u2019re studying.\u00a0 Then I cut and glue each poem and set of literary terms to one poster.\u00a0 You can always make this low prep poetry lesson even easier on yourself by handwriting those labels or having students write them<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presentation: I\u2019m a very visual person, so I project the poems up on my board via a Canva presentation.\u00a0 I highly encourage you to do the same.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summarizer: Finally, for this low prep poetry lesson, I print one copy of the summarizer for each student.\u00a0 But you could, once again, make your life even easier by data-id=\"9a6e3a3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1781fbe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1781fbe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The activator is designed so students can gain a baseline understanding of each poem.\u00a0 This includes a very preliminary summary with details like:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Who is talking? Who is the poem about?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Where and when does the poem take place?<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">What are some main events that take place?<\/li><\/ul><p>We read the poem and discuss the above questions in this low prep poetry lesson.\u00a0 I don\u2019t spend more than about 3 or 4 minutes per poem.\u00a0 The goal is to save the majority of the time for the group work component.<\/p><p>As noted, I don\u2019t dissuade students from annotating, but I also don\u2019t make it a requirement.\u00a0 Again, that saves time and helps alleviate the concerns many have about poetry (\u201cit\u2019s too hard\u201d; \u201cit\u2019s unrelatable,\u201d etc.).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83598cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"83598cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Part 2: Group Work<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd4a4f6 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"fd4a4f6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46a4ffe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46a4ffe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">Arguably the most important portion of this low prep poetry lesson is the group work.\u00a0 Once we\u2019ve read each poem for a summary, students put themselves into groups of 2-4.\u00a0 You can absolutely assign those groups, as needed.\u00a0 Then each group is directed to a poster.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we begin, I preview the objective and the literary element.\u00a0 The objective is for students to look a second time at a particular poem but this time from the vantage point of the prescribed literary element <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 I then review the literary term and set a timer. Students are expected to discuss their answer before writing it on the poster.\u00a0 As this happens, I move around the room and check in with groups, offering guidance and encouragement (and redirection, if needed).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the timer expires, I have students move to the next station.\u00a0 Their first task is to review what the group before them said.\u00a0 This helps not only solidify their understanding of the poem they just reviewed.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also a way to ensure all of the poems are thoroughly reviewed and analyzed from several vantage points.\u00a0 Then I detail the next station\u2019s literary element (different from the first) and set the timer. The expectations are the same.\u00a0 I use this time to move around the room.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We repeat the process for as much time as we have or as many literary elements as we have.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-142cbc1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"142cbc1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step Four of your Low Prep Poetry Lesson: Assess Students<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6eb02d0 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6eb02d0\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b999378 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b999378\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before students formally complete the summarizer for this low prep poetry lesson, I preview the prompt.\u00a0 Then I allow them to work in their groups to bounce ideas off one another.\u00a0 For my twentieth century lesson, mentioned earlier, here is my summarizer prompt:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prompt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: After completing the gallery walk, choose at least <\/span><b>three <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poems from our 20th century poetry set and select <\/span><b>one or more literary elements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we analyzed (mood and tone, imagery, structure, sound devices, or speaker and point of view). Write a 5+ sentence paragraph that compares how those elements function across the poems to convey ideas about war, mortality, defiance, or human struggle.
