class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key to success with this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Modest Proposal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lesson is establishing a timeline for your students.\u00a0 To do that, I suggest introducing the time period.\u00a0 That would include its historical details as well as socioeconomic factors.\u00a0 In my classroom, I use a one-page informative article with my students.\u00a0 We read about the time period and discuss prior knowledge so we have a starting point for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Modest Proposal.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 I have also used some YouTube videos to introduce the time period.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd63b34 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" 400;\">The majority of my <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Modest Proposal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lesson definitely centers around the text itself.\u00a0 I provide students with their own copy and we work through it together.\u00a0 To help aid understanding, I modify the text so it features comprehension questions throughout.\u00a0 These are along the lines of summary, as opposed to analysis, so we can get through the text more quickly.\u00a0 I also have a Spanish translation of the text (and comprehension questions) that I use with my non-native speakers for my <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Modest Proposal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lesson.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc2a4a4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"dc2a4a4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff1e0ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ff1e0ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Modest Proposal: Activity<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a52b6f7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a52b6f7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bce81e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bce81e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activity I use with this lesson invites students to interact with the satire of the text.\u00a0 To make it more fun and engaging, I give each small group a \u201cdeck of cards.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve created these to look just like playing cards, but each card features a quotation from the text.\u00a0 Students use these cards to complete a graphic organizer that has students investigate five satirical elements Swift uses.\u00a0 For an added challenge in this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Modest Proposal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lesson, you could withhold these cards and have students look in the text on their own.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6952cbd e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the hard work completed to start the lesson culminates in the final task.\u00a0 For this, I have students write a one-page essay that critiques a modern day issue.\u00a0 Students use a handful of satirical elements already covered as they mimic Swift\u2019s style.\u00a0 I provide them with a skeleton to brainstorm as well as the rubric.\u00a0 The result ends up being a ton of fun!\u00a0 Kids love to \u201cspill the tea,\u201d so to speak, and this assessment allows them to do just that.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74cbe76 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"74cbe76\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c34e4aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c34e4aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sum, teaching Jonathan Swift\u2019s satirical essay is such a fun <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:
