I like to take ownership for following Hozier\u2019s music since his first album.\u00a0 And I proudly stand behind the brilliance of Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 So when Hozier released <\/span>Unreal Unearth<\/span><\/i> in 2023, it was a match made in Heaven.\u00a0 Or maybe Hell.<\/span><\/p>

Dante's Inferno: An Overview<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> is the first installment in his trilogy, <\/span>The Divine Comedy<\/span><\/i>, a fourteenth century masterpiece.\u00a0 It follows Dante on his spiritual and, at times, terrifying quest through the Christian afterlife.<\/span><\/p>

Dante begins with Virgil in Hell.\u00a0 Together, they progressively descend into the uttermost depths of Satan\u2019s realm.\u00a0 The Italian poet envisioned nine circles in all, each intensifying in both sin and punishment the deeper one descends.<\/span><\/p>

Loosely, Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> aligns with the seven cardinal sins.\u00a0 Of course, he takes some creative liberties in there given the real and fictional characters he damned to Hell.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Teaching Dante's Inferno<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

I consider myself deeply blessed to be able to teach portions of Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> with my sophomores.\u00a0 Specifically, we read all of circles two (lust, lucky us) and nine (betrayal).\u00a0 But it\u2019s just too good <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>to at least touch on the other seven circles.<\/span><\/p>

We begin with a brief overview of <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i>, discussing and animating its structure before diving into the more enjoyable aspects of the sin, punishment, and sinners in each circle.\u00a0 Depending on my class and the time we have, we will split into small groups and prepare miniature presentations dedicated to each circle.\u00a0 Then we share out and revel in the details.\u00a0 It\u2019s great and very captivating for students who are unfamiliar with the concepts Dante practically trademarked.<\/span><\/p>

But this year, I ran the best activity I could possibly think of when it comes to Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Dante's Inferno and Hozier's Unreal Unearth: What a Pair<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The first year I taught Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> was 2023 \u2013 February, to be exact.\u00a0 Around March or April of that year, one of my students (a fellow Hozier \u201cstan\u201d) couldn\u2019t wait to tell me about his new album, set to drop in August.<\/span><\/p>

His latest album, she told me, was all about Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno!<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Man, I had missed it by just a few months!<\/span><\/p>

But my plans stayed in the back of my mind for almost a year.\u00a0 I could hardly wait to put them into action.<\/span><\/p>

All it took was one listen to <\/span>Unreal Unearth<\/span><\/i> and I knew I was in love.\u00a0 It\u2019s pure genius.\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t yet checked it out, you must do so.<\/span><\/p>

While in lockdown in 2020, Hozier read Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> and was profoundly impacted by the parallels.\u00a0 What he came up with was the most beautiful, creative, and poignant album that, almost song-for-song, tracks a modern day listener through the circles of Hell.<\/span><\/p>

For example, his track \u201cFrancesca,\u201d obviously goes with the second circle of Hell, where a sympathetic Dante speaks with a woman named Francesca.\u00a0 \u201cButchered Tongue\u201d is an interpretive take on violence in the Wexford Rebellion in Ireland.<\/span><\/p>

The more I dug, the more amazed I was at what Hozier did on his album. I couldn\u2019t find a more perfect pair than Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> and Hozier\u2019s album.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Generally, I knew I wanted students to learn about and appreciate the same parallels I saw between this centuries-old text and this brand-new album.<\/span><\/p>

But how?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Assign the Circles<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

First, I had students work in groups of two or three.\u00a0 I then assigned each group a particular circle of Hell and the corresponding song off the album.<\/span><\/p>

There are definitely some songs that are \u201ceasier\u201d than others.\u00a0 Specifically, it\u2019s more obvious how Hozier was inspired by Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 \u201cFrancesca\u201d was already mentioned.\u00a0 \u201cFirst Light\u201d is another that comes to mind.\u00a0 It is the final song and mirrors Dante\u2019s emergence from the depths of Hell.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Read Excerpts from the Original Text<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Because I\u2019m a Literature teacher the literature is, well, kind of important.\u00a0 You know?\u00a0 I was very procedural with my students, explaining that following each of these steps was the best way for them to understand the whole project.<\/span><\/p>

Once circles were assigned, students would see me for a copy of excerpts from their circle of Hell.\u00a0 To do this, I used one of my precious snow days to re-read the entirety of Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 Yes, all of it!<\/span><\/p>

I required students to annotate the text and answer comprehension questions along the way.\u00a0 Their goal was to pull out patterns and particular word choices.\u00a0 Knowing the song before them, I devised the questions to help them find the most meaningful patterns and word choices.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With an understanding of the text under their belts, students then listened to the song (several times, I encouraged) and annotated the song lyrics.\u00a0 Again, they answered questions and searched for patterns.\u00a0 And again, I structured the worksheet to help them get their more directly.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Compare and Contrast Dante's Inferno and Hozier's Unreal Unearth<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

As students gained confidence and momentum, they next compared and contrasted the text and the song.\u00a0 They did this thanks to individualized worksheets per song and circle.\u00a0 Not only did students look for visual similarities (i.e. in the words) but I also challenged them to listen for the similarities, too.<\/span><\/p>

Or the differences \u2026<\/span><\/p>

In \u201cButchered Tongue,\u201d for example, you might expect a heavy, stressful beat given that it\u2019s about the violent.\u00a0 But it\u2019s a quiet, soft tune.\u00a0 I assigned this as one of the more challenging circles and really coached my students on how to listen for those differences.\u00a0 And then how to make sense of them.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The culminating stage of this process was a digital presentation to share in front of the class.\u00a0 I graded each of the aforementioned steps along the way.\u00a0 In our department, we weigh grades, so the final presentation held more weight being graded as an assessment.\u00a0 Grading the individual steps helped balance that for those who were not keen on presenting.<\/span><\/p>

Let me tell you, the Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno <\/span>and Hozier presentations absolutely blew me out of the water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I do not exaggerate when I say I\u2019ve listened to <\/span>Unreal Unearth<\/span> straight through <\/span>hundreds <\/span>of times.<\/span><\/p>

And my students still taught me things I never noticed before.\u00a0 Students not only tackled the lyrical and textual similarities, but they zeroed in on all the subtle and creative sounds Hozier so clearly wanted us to hear.\u00a0 From instruments to tempo to style, my students had the most creative, complex, and sophisticated insights I could have ever hoped for.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

If you follow some of my other blog posts, you know I take a lot of pride in being the Literature teacher responsible for most of our Spanish-speaking students.\u00a0 This year, they account for a growing portion of my classroom population, so I know I have to up my game when preparing material for them.<\/span><\/p>

For my <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> and Hozier project, I accommodate in two majors ways.\u00a0 First, I assigned them one of the two circles we covered in depth in our class: Circle Two and Circle Nine.\u00a0 It just made sense given we read the entirety of those texts (with my language accommodations).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

If you don\u2019t teach those two circles specifically, \u201cFrancesca\u201d and \u201cUnknown\/Nth\u201d are two of the more approachable circles and songs.<\/span><\/p>

The other major accommodation I provide is a translation of the text, song lyrics, and worksheets.\u00a0 Providing material in their native language can help them break down some of the initial barriers so they can really dive in deeply and make the most of this assignment.<\/span><\/p>

I did not require my ELLs to present in front of the entire class.\u00a0 Instead, I had them present to me during our study hall period in front of a smaller group of fellow ELL students.<\/span><\/p>

If you teach <\/span>Dante\u2019s Inferno<\/span><\/i>, I cannot contain my enthusiastic recommendation that you incorporate at least some of Hozier\u2019s <\/span>Unreal Unearth<\/span><\/i> into your lessons.\u00a0 Full disclosure: part of me hopes Hozier stumbles across this humble little blog so he can read how fully I\u2019m geeking out over his music and his brilliance.<\/span><\/p>

Even though Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> is hundreds of years old, it\u2019s still relevant today.\u00a0 Within the last decade, a major motion picture featuring Tom Hanks was released (it was based on Dan Brown\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i>).\u00a0 And just a few weeks after we concluded our <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> unit, one of my students emailed me over the weekend to share with me that Dante\u2019s <\/span>Inferno<\/span><\/i> popped up in the podcast she listened to.\u00a0 She was so excited to understand deeply what the host was trying to say.<\/span><\/p>
