As a follow-up to planning rigorous activities, I highly encourage you to incorporate a Socratic seminar into your engaging novel unit.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I did this most recently with my advanced sophomores after they finished reading <\/span>Antigone.<\/span>\u00a0 As preparation, they had to generate at least 8 thought-provoking, open-ended questions they wanted to discuss.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I then explained: \u201cIn an ideal world, I\u2019ll say \u2018Go\u2019 and won\u2019t have to say anything again until \u2018Sorry, we are out of time and have to wrap things up.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Essentially, this means the discussion should be entirely student-led with little to no teacher \u201cinterference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I was blown away at the quality and depth of the discussion.\u00a0 The power dynamic was entirely shifted from teacher to student.\u00a0 They were polite, curious, and perceptive.\u00a0 And I was blown away.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Reading journals are another great addition to an engaging novel unit.\u00a0 When I build mind, I like to do so with the whole unit in mind.\u00a0 I prepare all the pages and staple them together for each student.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In my academic classes (as opposed to my advanced classes) where comprehension is a key goal, we complete about one page of the journal per class.\u00a0 I vary how we do this: independently, as a large group, with a partner.\u00a0 And I collect journals each day to assess students\u2019 work.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Admittedly, this much grading can be time-consuming.\u00a0 Oftentimes I collect journals daily at the start of the year while we\u2019re building our routine and learning how to meet expectations.\u00a0 But as the year progresses and students develop skills, I back off a bit. Sometimes that means collecting journals once a week or even at the end of the unit only.<\/span><\/p>

When planning my engaging novel unit, I look for ways to get students up and moving.\u00a0 A gallery walk is perfect for this.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Successful gallery walks for me have included posters with engaging quotes from the text.\u00a0 Students move around the room (either \u201cfree range\u201d or with a set time limit) and discuss those quotes.\u00a0 I often post discussion questions to facilitate the conversations.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I\u2019ve also had students complete gallery walks to observe their classmates\u2019 work.\u00a0 I love to have students create posters, usually ones that delve deeply into characterization or setting.\u00a0 I allot a set time to prepare the poster and then build in time for students to see their classmates\u2019 work.\u00a0 This is a cool way to foster accountability (it\u2019s embarrassing to create a lame poster) and student learning (they learn so much just by reading what their peers did).<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A gallery walk I love to use each year is this one for the characters in <\/span>Julius Caesar<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Speaking of accountability, I look to incorporate it whenever possible in an engaging novel unit.\u00a0 I really like the idea of students learning a lot by doing relatively little work.\u00a0 This harkens back to my previous post about my previewing jigsaw activities.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

With this task, I\u2019ll create a class presentation (and make enough copies of it for duplicate classes).\u00a0 Each person or pair is assigned a slide.\u00a0 Their objective is to fill that slide with engaging information and design it to be visually appealing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the end of the work period, I share the presentation on my projector for everyone to see.\u00a0 Depending on the class, I\u2019ll read the slides (modifying or adding any information, as needed) or have the students do so.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In the past month, I\u2019ve done this twice with two different classes.\u00a0 I had my sophomores participate in a Greek Mythology Google Slides presentation (my bundle is linked here<\/a>).\u00a0 And I had my seniors track all the places Holden Caulfield went in <\/span>Catcher<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The final piece of an engaging novel unit is for students to show what they know.\u00a0 For me, I avoid traditional forms of assessment as often as possible.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong: we write essays and I certainly see the value.\u00a0 But traditional exams (multiple choice, true\/false, open-ended response) are pretty much out the window for me unless it\u2019s a quick reading quiz.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So what do I do instead?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I try to offer as much voice and choice as I can in a menu of project options.\u00a0 Though the project options definitely change per text, the basic premise remains the same.\u00a0 I try to target as many learning styles and interests as I can so everyone can find at least one inspiring idea.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/span><\/a> project options are probably my best example of this right now.\u00a0 From psychology to art to analytical thinking, I like to think my seniors have a ton of possibilities at their fingertips.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And I have a creative but still formal way of assessing what they learned in the novel.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
