It\u2019s at the core of every English teacher\u2019s job.\u00a0 How to create an engaging novel unit.\u00a0 Here are the first five steps to engaging all my learners, no matter the text I use.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The first step in creating an engaging novel unit is to have a plan.\u00a0 I always start with the end in mind.\u00a0 Usually, that means having a vision for my assessment.\u00a0 As often as possible, I like to incorporate voice and choice in diverse project offerings.\u00a0 (More to come on that in a short while.)<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Once I know where the novel unit is headed, I can more effectively map out the anchor points along the way.\u00a0 It might be the introduction of a character.\u00a0 Or a pivotal plot moment.\u00a0 Regardless, I\u2019ll latch onto the key points in the text.\u00a0 From there, I\u2019ll create seminal activities that are usually more involved.\u00a0 That means for me as well as my students.<\/span><\/p>

With the chapters or moments we have left, I like to map out any engaging novel unit with a blend of independent work, large group instruction, and group tasks.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The second step in an engaging novel unit is to ensure your students have the necessary information before reading the text.\u00a0 Though I don\u2019t teach social studies, a lot of the time, key events in history shape the texts we read.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Take, for example, <\/span>Night<\/span> by Elie Wiesel.\u00a0 There is no reasonable way you could jump right into the text without some background information first.\u00a0 I want my students to have at least a baseline understanding of what and when the Holocaust was.\u00a0 And its key figures.\u00a0 And its racial motivations.\u00a0 And its aftermath.<\/span><\/p>

But I don\u2019t want a boring lecture.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So I love to introduce historical information like this with learning stations.\u00a0 Or, I\u2019ll sometimes call them a jigsaw activity.\u00a0 Basically, students are responsible for a small portion of information that they then teach their group.\u00a0 After everyone has shared their information, students walk away having learned a lot but done relatively little \u201cwork.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Accommodate ELL Students in your engaging novel unit<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t

This year, almost half of my classes have been infused with Spanish speakers.\u00a0 And I have worked my tail off to be as inclusive as I can for these learners, most of whom are Spanish-speaking.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When we cover a larger text in my class \u2013 like <\/span>Hamlet<\/a> <\/span>or <\/span>Oedipus Rex<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>Of Mice and Men<\/span><\/a> \u2013 I always create an abridged and translated booklet for my ELLs.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This starts first with abridged summaries of the chapters or scenes from a text.\u00a0 I usually adapt these to be at a fourth grade reading level, which I have found is most language-appropriate for my lower-level ELLs.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Then I translate those summaries into Spanish using translator apps online.\u00a0 I put these translations side-by-side with the English summaries.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll include graphics and other images to aid understanding if there\u2019s room on the page.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These booklets have been a lifesaver for me.\u00a0 They\u2019re such a helpful accompaniment to the texts we read.\u00a0 I love to see how they boost the confidence of my ELL students.<\/span><\/p>

Another key step in building an engaging novel unit is to have a plan for assessing student learning along the way.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My students learn early in the year they can expect some form of exit slip every day.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard work being so consistent.\u00a0 Especially when there is so much else to accomplish in a class period!\u00a0 But it\u2019s worth it.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I even suggest building \u201cstock\u201d exit slips that can work with any text.\u00a0 I did that when I first taught <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/span> and it was a huge timesaver. It might sound self-explanatory when building an engaging novel unit, but engaging activities are a must.<\/span><\/p>

As I mentioned before, I try to pinpoint three to five key moments in any given text.\u00a0 That number fluctuates depending on the text, of course.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From there, I put a lot of time and energy into creating memorable activities that really get my students to think outside the box.\u00a0 Depending on the class and the time of year, these can also be partner- or group-based.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And any way I can \u201ctrick\u201d my students into forgetting they\u2019re in English class is a plus.\u00a0 For example, when we read <\/span>Oedipus Rex<\/span>, I have students role play from the first word of the tragedy.\u00a0 First, they step into the role of detective; then interrogator; and finally, lawyer.\u00a0 This creative role play piqued their interest, for sure, but still required they pay close attention to the text.\u00a0 They were able to pick out key details in the text they would never have \u201cfelt like doing\u201d if they had a boring worksheet.<\/span><\/p>
