If you haven\u2019t yet read <\/span>Catcher, <\/span>or if it\u2019s been a while, it\u2019s really important you have a baseline before selecting your <\/span>Catcher in the Rye <\/span>activities.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

J.D. Salinger\u2019s <\/span>The Catcher in the Rye<\/span> is one of America\u2019s quintessential novels.\u00a0 It follow the experiences of Holden Caulfield as he navigates a handful of days in New York City on his own.\u00a0 What makes the story so interesting is Holden is a teenager.\u00a0 And a disenchanted, rebellious one at that.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In a lot of ways, it\u2019s a coming-of-age story that resonates deeply with audiences for the sympathy we feel for Holden.\u00a0 And in other ways, it\u2019s a metaphorical middle finger to 1950s America and the unrealistic expectations placed on the youth.<\/span><\/p>

Holden\u2019s voice is unforgettable as he narrates the novel to make sense of his world in a way that is both grating and endearing.\u00a0 Readers feel like they\u2019re right there with him as he navigates love, loss, and deep-seeded loneliness.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I have always loved this book.\u00a0 I go back to my Master\u2019s program when I designed an entire unit around it.\u00a0 And it now feels full circle as I read it with my seniors and create meaningful <\/span>Catcher in the Rye <\/span>activities.\u00a0 Here are some of my favorites.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Right off the bat, the reader can tell something is a bit \u201coff\u201d about our protagonist.\u00a0 But that\u2019s part of why we find him so endearing.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the first project on the <\/span>Catcher in the Rye <\/i><\/span>activities list, students can dig deeply into Holden\u2019s subconscious.\u00a0 I recommend making students aware of their options at the start of reading the novel so they can purposefully track evidence along the way.<\/span><\/p>

For this activity, have students make note of Holden\u2019s rapidly declining attitude towards living.\u00a0 At first, he skirts around the idea that he doesn\u2019t feel quite right.\u00a0 Eventually, he romanticizes visions of his own death.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

You could also have them track specific moments when he seems to beg for help.\u00a0 When he speaks with Luce, for example, they talk about the fact that Luce\u2019s father is a therapist.\u00a0 Or Holden calls himself a \u201cwounded sonuvabitch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Of all the <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/i><\/span> activities, this one is definitely designed for those who enjoy psychology.\u00a0 The end result could be a variety of creative presentations.\u00a0 Perhaps you have students put Holden\u2019s \u201ccase file,\u201d invoking the use of manila folders and prop prescriptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Or you could have students present their findings in the form of a digital presentation or a tri-fold poster.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

When I student-taught, I created something very similar to this activity.\u00a0 I still remember the effects it had on some of my more reluctant learners.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the next of the <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/i><\/span> activities, encourage students to find an object that is meaningful to them (and that they are permitted \u201cdeface\u201d in a sense).\u00a0 The idea is to replicate the look and symbolic value of Allie\u2019s mitt.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In the novel, Holden speaks a handful of times about his brother Allie\u2019s baseball mitt.\u00a0 On it, Allie had scribbled various quotes and poetry.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For this project, students could find a similarly-valuable item and keep track of important quotes from the book.\u00a0 Encourage analysis by having students also write what the quote means in the context of Holden\u2019s life and their own.\u00a0 They could do this on the item itself or in a separate log.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I also encourage students to incorporate quotes and tidbits from their own lives.\u00a0 Those might include quotes from their favorite songs or public personalities.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The idea with this activity is for students to appreciate what Allie\u2019s mitt meant to Holden and to make personal connections with the book themselves.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Another cool option in the list of Catcher in the Rye<\/em> activities is for students to keep detailed track of Holden\u2019s whereabouts in the novel.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From Pencey to his hotel to the clubs on the streets of New York to his apartment: Holden covers a lot of ground in his few days on his own.<\/span><\/p>

Again, there\u2019s a lot of value to introducing this activity (and others) before students read the novel.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Interestingly enough, there are a lot of similarities between Holden and, say, Odysseus.\u00a0 Each character embarks on his own quest with life-changing encounters along the way.\u00a0 Even though Holden is far from your typical hero, his quest is noteworthy.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Important to note in one of these Catcher in the Rye<\/em> activities is what Holden experiences and learns at each of his stops.\u00a0 For this activity, have students track those locations in order to make sense of each.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Another one of the think-outside-the-box <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/i><\/span> activities is the life-size character cut-out.\u00a0 There\u2019s an inside joke that runs through my family.\u00a0 It started with a grandmother\u2019s 80th birthday party and a cardboard cut-out of Elvis.\u00a0 That very same Elvis makes its way to just about any and every family function at this point.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That\u2019s basically the inspiration for this <\/span>Catcher<\/i><\/span> activity.\u00a0 But instead of Elvis, well, it\u2019s Holden.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Your artists will love the opportunity to bring the character to life – almost literally.\u00a0 Encourage them to use both textual evidence and their imagination for what our protagonist might look like.\u00a0 I encourage my students to give him props, too.\u00a0 Like his red hunting hat.\u00a0 And maybe a copy of D.B.\u2019s <\/span>The Secret Goldfish.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

You can add rigor, too, by having students supplementing the cut-out (or perhaps filling the back) with character traits that best define Holden.\u00a0 Those should be quotes from the book, events that shape him as well as his hopes and his fears.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Definitely one of the more artistic of the <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/i><\/span> activities is the graphic novel.\u00a0 Remember my suggestion to introduce this early on.\u00a0 This project follows suit.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I encourage students to carefully track the events of every chapter.\u00a0 When they\u2019ve read two or three, have them step back and evaluate what happened and how they might artistically represent that.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Catcher <\/span>has a hearty twenty-six chapters, so there\u2019s definitely a lot to run with if you have students design a full-page spread for every two chapters or so.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A lot of times it can be difficult to distinguish between a graphic novel and a comic book.\u00a0 But I think <\/span>Catcher<\/span> is a really convenient way to remember that graphic novels are darker and often denser.\u00a0 What do I mean by that?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Graphic novels go deep, exploring the rich symbolism and darker motifs of a story in an effort to draw out the larger themes. <\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Catcher<\/span> has a ton of that, and it definitely has the grit that I connote with graphic novels.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

I\u2019m starting to sound like Phoebe\u2019s shattered record, but I cannot stress strongly enough tuning students in early with these <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/span> activities.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the poetry anthology option, students would stop and reflect after each of the twenty-six chapters in <\/span>Catcher<\/span> and write a piece of poetry.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Encourage them to locate a central idea, motif, or symbol from which they can draw inspiration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Motivate them to be unafraid of their emotions, as unconventional as they might be (just like Holden himself).<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Lead them to include a variety of poetic styles from free verse (an homage to Holden himself).\u00a0 Or blackout poetry (for the illustrious D.B.).\u00a0 And to sonnets (for Jane).<\/span><\/p>

At the conclusion of the text, when students step back, they\u2019ll have an anthology of twenty-six powerful poems.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Have students go back and edit their work.\u00a0 And the final project should be bound like a published book would be.\u00a0 Canva can be a great place to start when designing a neat book jacket.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It may seem paradoxical that someone as withdrawn and reclusive as Holden would have so much to say.\u00a0 I would venture a guess that you\u2019ll similarly have students speak what\u2019s on their mind and make powerful connections to Holden himself.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

We aren\u2019t done yet with the list of <\/span>Catcher in the Rye<\/span> activities.\u00a0 This one is definitely for those who aren\u2019t afraid to take on a heavier workload.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For this <\/span>Catcher<\/span> activity, encourage students to study an additional work they feel was heavily influenced by Salinger\u2019s work. This can be a novel or a film.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As far as novels, <\/span>The Perks of Being a Wallflower<\/span> by Stephen Chbosky is a solid suggestion if students wonder where to start.\u00a0 Both novels feature isolated protagonists struggling with mental health issues in a coming-of-age atmosphere.\u00a0 Plus, the book has been adapted into a film, which is a bonus.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

You could also have students compare <\/span>Catcher <\/span>with <\/span>Garden State,<\/span> a 2004 film starring Zach Braff.\u00a0 Again, the protagonists share an existential angst and use their lack of emotions (at least, at the surface) to combat the struggles they so deeply combat.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Of course, these are just two ideas to get you started.\u00a0 Other, lighter options exist.\u00a0 Like <\/span>Ferris Bueler\u2019s Day Off.<\/span>\u00a0 I encourage you and your students to check out what other bloggers have said about works inspired by <\/span>Catcher<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

How students showcase what they found is up to you.\u00a0 You could definitely encourage a traditional essay that compares and contrasts <\/span>Catcher<\/span> and a selected work.\u00a0 They could present their findings through a slideshow or a tri-fold poster.\u00a0 Or find a blank bulletin board in your room or hallway and have them decorate it based on what they found.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Salinger himself.<\/span><\/p>

I love this activity for the utility it provides, especially if I have an unplanned absence towards the middle to end of the unit.<\/span><\/p>

The idea with the choice board first and foremost is voice and choice. Students can choose how they want to demonstrate their knowledge.<\/span><\/p>

Speaking of \u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I love choice boards<\/span> for quick, informal assessment.\u00a0 It\u2019s so much more creative than a quiz, test, or even an open-ended response.<\/span><\/p>

And I love that this activity can be as formal or as informal as you want.\u00a0 I\u2019ve used it both as quick end-of-lesson summarizers that require no coloring.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve worked it in as a larger assessment that requires time and more effort.<\/span><\/p>
