secret.\u00a0 Sometimes I think my best instructional content comes in the eleventh hour.\u00a0 That was certainly the case with HG Wells The Star.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me tell you more.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b9b7cc7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con Star<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bda0187 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"bda0187\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, if you haven\u2019t read \u201cThe Star\u201d by HG Wells, I highly recommend it.\u00a0 It\u2019s a relatively short science fiction story.\u00a0 It details a potentially-apocalyptic astrological event in a creative way.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HG Wells\u2019 The Star opens with the observation of a strange star-like body in the sky.\u00a0 What seems to be a new star in the celestial sky is at first exciting and celebrated.\u00a0 However, it quickly becomes serious as the star has a devastating pull on the planets in its path of destruction.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon, Earth is one of those planets.\u00a0 The gravitational pull of the new celestial body has devastating consequences on earth, ranging from a rise in temperature, earthquakes, and catastrophic floods.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are on the edge of your seat wondering, \u201cWhere is HG Wells The Star\u201d going?\u201d Earth narrowly escapes.\u00a0 The story concludes with a creative narrative viewpoint from Martians as the reader realizes how insignificant humans \u2014 and our supposed tragedies \u2014 really are in the grand scheme of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f08473 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0f08473\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f783bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4f783bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Teaching HG Wells The Star to my Students<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bbebabf e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"bbebabf\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4be43d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4be43d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I teach HG Wells The Star to my seniors in our British Literature elective.\u00a0 But I could see this story working in any secondary English (or Science!) classroom.\u00a0 As long as you have the proper scaffolding.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For my seniors, I assign HG Wells The Star first as an independent reading task.\u00a0 I also incorporate comprehension questions and open-ended questions as well.\u00a0 Since these are seniors, we dive right into more complex questions.\u00a0 For example, \u201chow would you summarize the central theme of the text?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhich piece of textual evidence best exemplifies the narrator\u2019s sarcasm?\u201d \u201cHow does the author use juxtaposition to develop his overall theme?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once students have finished reading the text, we progress into a small group discussion.\u00a0 We primarily target those open-ended questions I mentioned.\u00a0 Here are a few of them we typically cover:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does each \u201ccharacter\u201d respond to the impending apocalyptic event?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does the \u201cfrom Earth\u201d narrative point of view compare and contrast with the Martian point of view at the end of the text?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What role does religion play in our understanding of the universe? What about our role within the universe?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could do so much with this text!\u00a0 I love that it\u2019s relatively short but still morally complex.\u00a0 That sets the stage for rich discussion to follow.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-706847d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"706847d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Creative Poster Project for HG Wells The Star<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e06b002 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"e06b002\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9644601 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I love most about teaching HG Wells the Star, though, is the creative poster project at the heart of the lesson.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be really tempting to assess students in a traditional format, whether that be through multiple choice questions or open-ended responses.\u00a0 While such assessment has its place, I try to find creative alternatives to assessing my students\u2019 understanding.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usher in the creative poster project with HG Wells The Star.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, you can have students first exercise voice and choice by choosing one of the four project options that best suits their interests and strengths.\u00a0 It\u2019s up to you how they complete this.\u00a0 Maybe you have them work independently.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s with a partner.\u00a0 Or, like me, maybe you\u2019ll have students work in small groups (think three or four).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div Assess the Scientific Validity of the story<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d88743 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do find it pretty wild that HG Wells wrote a scientifically-sound astronomical short story before 1900.\u00a0 Notice I said \u201cscientifically-sound\u201d and not \u201cirrefutable\u201d or \u201cperfect.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s at the heart of this poster project.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientifically-minded students will love the opportunity to explore exactly what scientific details hold true in HG Wells The Star.\u00a0 And which don\u2019t.\u00a0 Have them investigate centrifugal and centripetal force.\u00a0 Encourage them to consider the plausibility of a celestial body \u201cgrabbing hold\u201d of planets as it hurtles through the solar system.\u00a0 Oh, and don\u2019t forget about those Martians at the end: is it possible they existed?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will present their findings in a creative way via their poster.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For your creative writers in the room, this is the perfect project for them.\u00a0 Students will write their own, original alternate ending to the story.\u00a0 They have to be sure they\u2019re paying attention.\u00a0 The new ending should seamlessly flow with what already exists.\u00a0 That means your students will have to pay careful attention to narrative voice, themes, and other intricate details.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suggest a one-page minimum for their ending.\u00a0 And the poster should include not only the ending itself but insight into their thought process.\u00a0 If there\u2019s time, encourage students to also offer illustrations or character portraits.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7048e92 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" invested in music it\u2019s like another language to them.\u00a0 So play on those strengths by offering this project option!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, students will curate the perfect playlist to accompany the short story.\u00a0 Their playlist should include at least five songs spanning a variety of musical genres.\u00a0 Encourage them to follow the narrative arc of the story (think: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution), which not only suits their project but helps you assess their understanding.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And require students to defend their choices so you know they weren\u2019t chosen haphazardly.\u00a0 I suggest at least two sentences per song choice.\u00a0 The poster can then artistically represent the playlist (maybe it\u2019s designed to look like an actual Spotify playlist).\u00a0 Bonus points if they play the songs for the class!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1cdb3b6 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" feature-length blockbuster set to be released this summer.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s released as a melodrama right in time for awards season in January.\u00a0 What if Jordan Peele picked it up and delivered his next horror film.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, this is where your students can take their creative line of thinking as they design a movie poster for the story.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will include not only the title and director (maybe HG Wells himself) but also include actors\u2019 names and a tagline.\u00a0 Encourage students to have fun with the genre, casting, and script.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heart of the poster, though, should speak for itself visually.\u00a0 This is really the most artistic project option.\u00a0 You want your budding artists to really pull out the creative stops as they mess around with different genres and media.\u00a0 They\u2019ll love the creative freedom you offer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-739a1a0 e-flex e-con-boxed class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I first designed this lesson plan, I didn\u2019t quite know where it was going to go.\u00a0 I knew I wanted to include something by Wells.\u00a0 And the length of this story seemed right.\u00a0 But how could I give it that extra \u201coomph\u201d that defines my educational content?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truly, it was the day before I taught this lesson \u2014 the night before after my children had gone to bed, to be exact \u2014 that I came up
